SpeedFreakSteve – so that we don’t high jack some one else tred, I started a new one.
What gasket? Aren’t you changing the complete motor?
SpeedFreakSteve

Still need gaskets for all the piping right... like the turbo to O2 housing gaskets, O2 housing to precat gaskets, precat to downpipe gaskets, stuff like that.
Do you think its worth it for me to get EGR blockoff plates?
I’m blocking mine.
What the EGR does is heat up the upper plenum with exhaust gas and then recycles it to the engine.
I want to keep my plenum as cold as possible and recycling wasted gas will not give you a better explosion in the cylinders.

haha thats not very envromentally frendly no?
lol how do you block off the EGR?
From what I understood the egr system is there is there to help prevent knock. (not something I wanna fuck with) Unless theres something I'm missing??
Oh and Monopoly they sell small metal plates u just cover it up.
called "egr block off plates"

The reason for the egr system is to reuse exhaust gases since its supposedly better for the environment.
I think you're confusing EGR with EGT. Its good to measure the EGT since it tells you if things are too hot in your engine, which is similar to monitoring knock since its another way of telling you when your engine is being pushed beyond safe limits.
Look up EGR and EGT here:
http://www.dsm.org/info/glossary.htm
Some say that EGR blockoff plates are also better for your engine.
I think its worth it since they're pretty cheap ($40 USD).

here is a pic of the ones i got!!!
e2kmfg/Bob K on 3si sells them, good guy too, buy them here!!!!, I did!!! (http://www.ek2development.com/store.htm)

i also bought this plenum spacer too, not installed yet though..... supposed to help cool plenum

From a car website
Quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The EGR valve recirculates exhaust into the intake stream. Exhaust gases have already combusted, so they do not burn again when they are recirculated. These gases displace some of the normal intake charge. This chemically slows and cools the combustion process by several hundred degrees, thus reducing NOx formation...
Too little flow will increase NOx and cause engine ping. A well-designed system will actually increase engine performance and economy. Why? As the combustion chamber temperature is reduced, engine detonation potential is also reduced....
thats just one place I read it one I've read it in atleast 3 maybe 4 different places.
So now my question is: is the egr valve open at WOT? And is that when it does most of it's work?
The main reason for EGR blockoffs are to keep the intake charge cooler. On our engines that run at about a million degrees F, I doubt it would make any significant difference, excpet in the winter whn your car would take longer to warm up, and pollute more. But some would say every bit counts. I did it to a previous car and couldnt feel a difference. Once the car is hot, it really doesnt matter much.
Until I see someone do temp readings on the innter intake before and after the bypass, its snake oil to me.
But some would say every bit counts.
Yes and you need to start some where.
Cooling the air:
IC in front of the radiator. Where you get force air going through it.
Good ventilation under the hood, so that the ambient air doesn’t warm everything. (Hood bonnet + hood scoop)
Air intake. Even if we run turbo, the colder the better.
Heat shield under the plenum, so that the valve cove don’t warm up the plenum.
…
All of this and more will make a difference.

This is similar to the debate about plenum spacers.
The guys selling them showed that it did cool the plenum significantly. So they then claimed their product was the greatest thing ever just from measuring the outer plenum temperature.
The problem is... especially on turbo cars, the intake air coming is coming in is coming in so fast, and theres so much volume, that it barely has any time at all to draw much extra heat from the plenum.
So plenum spacers could be useless, but some still like it since it allows you to be able to touch the plenum soon after shutting off the car.
I agree, Fou. All I'm saying is if this is your only mod, and you drive in the winter, its probably not worth the trouble. I think it made more sense prior to aluminum intakes/plenums which dissapate heat better. Plus, EGR's themselves run better than they did in 1976 or whenever they first came out.

I think any mod that is shown to help our cars, even marginally and costs under $50 is worth doing if you have the extra cash lying around anyways.
Of course if it comes down to the choice of buying the mod or a case of beer, and you can only afford one or the other... get the beer!
Maybe. But as I said before, until it has been SHOWN to improve performance on our cars, and if it offsets driveability issues (i.e cold weather starts and increased fuel consumption) as well as whatever social conscience we may have about the effects on the environment.
For me, to get maybe at BEST 2hp, for someone just cruising the streets, its doesnt seem worth it. For someone going to the track i nthe summer, hell yeah, I'd do it.
Its an individuals choice, I respect yours, I'm just posing the alternative side.
thnx for all the replies but, umm like I said before:

that is reason enough for me to add one(which I am going to since I have it) but I had 3 failed attempts to put new plugs in the car this summer mainly because the dam plenum was to freakin hot to handle.
also from a service point of view EGR block off plates are good too because they make plenum removal and installation that much easier, with less packing around putting the EGR pipe on and shit!!

I had the same problem when I was replacing my speedometer gear. I waited for 2 hours and it was still too hot. So I just wrapped a towel around my arm to do it. Still burnt the hell out of my arm even with the towel... but that was mostly from the exhaust manifold.
Marius, the EGR is NOT open at WOT. Its main purpose is to re-circulate exhaust gases at START UP so that your car will warm up faster, thus spend less time running pig rich at start up.
thnx diablo thats what i eanted to know;)
Hi Steve

Still need the TT motor mount bracket that attaches to the front motor mount... they're different on TT's. If I don't get one though, could just grind off part of the one in my car so that its not in the way of the front turbo. Some guys have done that before.
I'm waiting on the precats from a guy on 3si.. other than that almost have everything to start.
I think its a better idea to do the motor swap with 360 injectors though. Better to work out any problems without having to deal with the ARC2 right away. I want to see if I can borrow some, or buy some for cheap just to use for the first little while. The 13G's should be able to handle 12 psi on stock injectors anyways.
Low boost for turbo’s is not a problem.
Do you have a TT Mass?

Sorry to pop in here guys, but will you pass ontario emissions testing with EGR block-off plates?
In other words, is it a "legal" mod? I dont want to have to pull the plenum and put everything back to stock just for a test, then pull it again to put the block off plates back in.

Oh ya... no I don't. I guess I would need one.
The ARC2 comes with the 83mm one, but can't really use that without the ARC2 obviously.

The EGR plates should only make you fail a visual inspection, as they do in california and some other states. The amount of emissions savings from using EGR plates isn't much.
I'll start posting picture of the TT job.

Now I'm really wishing that I washed it first!
Just to update the rest of the guys... I got a AWD 5-speed tranny and that is what we're going to use. Marc will weld the VCU in place and it will work as a FWD tranny. Only one guy in the world has done this before ("Gatecrasher" on 3si), but he can now dump the clutch at any RPM without worrying about his tranny breaking. NA trannies can break easily if you dump the clutch much past 3k RPM.... and a few trannies in FWD TT's have shattered the first time they went to the drag strip.
The AWD 5 speed tranny is almost twice as big in size as the NA 5 speed tranny. Its way stronger. Another advantage is, the clutches available for the AWD tranny are much better. The other advantage, is taller gearing. Won't have to shift out of 3rd at 92 MPH anymore. :)

Nice Steve.
I think the AWD tranny will help (for all the reasons we were talking about).

I have DSM intercoolers, but the stock ones I have were in like new condition.. and the DSM ones are kinda dinged up. I'd be happy to sell the DSM ones though pretty cheap. They should be alright with some cleanup, sandblasting or whatever.
that's ok Steve, I already have 2 DSM IC's on their way as we speak, should be getting them by the end of the week

Front LSD! Just need to save up the money for that.
Also I'm only using a stock TT downpipe and a NA stock catback (for now).. those are next on the list I guess. I think eventually I want to get a X-style downpipe (true dual exhaust) instead of the stock F-style.

With 400hp, you shouldn’t race anything slower than a Mustang.
You’ll need really good tires for a dead start, but roll on your car going to be extremely fast!

For those that don't know already.. I went to Shane's and we installed my ARC2, 83mm MAF and 510cc (EVO) injectors. I hadn't planned on doing it right away.. but Shane was bored or something so he wanted me to bring some mods over to install. :D
Now I think my car has too much power. Seriously.
One good thing.. I was getting slightly high EGT readings yesterday with the stock injectors. After installing the ARC2 and 510cc injectors my EGT's are lower.. but I'm getting ALOT more power.
I just need to tune the ARC2 abit better.. I gave Monopoly a scary ride on the 401 tonight, but I stalled coming off.. and then again at a traffic light.. I think the ARC2 was set a touch too lean.
Hopefully I'll figure out how to tune it more properly this week.
For those of you that were out tonite Scott, Fast Eddie (Aaron) and Monopoly (Adam).. I wanna go again.. that guy in the Porsche wants to race me... I would've tonight if it was tuned abit better.
