Hi,

New here, and looking around for a Stealth.

Anyone know this car?

Thanks,

I would question one thing. The ad says "new tranny". They don't make complete new OEM trannies anymore. They do make a replacement tranny made by Kormex, but not many people buy those unless there car is decently modded.

do you know how much one of those kormex transmissions costs and where to get one?

They cost alot, but are supposed to be stronger than stock trannies. I think they're between $2000-$3000 USD. They also sell 3S transfer case parts that you can't get from Mitsubishi anymore.

Don't know the vehicle, but with the mileage and repairs done, the price is in the right ballpark.

Take your time, and I'm sure you'll find the perfect beast.

I think they mean new synchros, gears, clutch, etc.

Thanks Snortin93. Yeah patience is definitely a virtue when buying a used car! Same dealer is supposed to have yellow 95 coming in.

Anyone interested check out my DSM:

That is exactly the same car i have. The sunroofs are a rare find.

Try and get the price down a bit though. I know they go for more out west, but i paid $16,500 for the same year/colour with 86,000km about a year and a half ago in Toronto... But a rebuilt transmission is a big plus also.

Check the paint under the bra too.

Thanks Fast Eddie,

I am slightly concerned about whats under the bra. My Talon was stone blasted on the hood and windshield when I got it. painted the hood for $300 and replaced the windshield for ~350.

I'm more concerned about the compression...should I be? I have searced for the procedure, and know I have to remove the plenum for the rear bank, but where do I find the fuel pump fuse and where do I unplug the coils?

Thanks

Phil

I have heard of that car, even went to check it out.
It appears all the work done to it is top notch IMO. I believe the "dealership" put like 7 grand into it or something...?
Several people that were looking at buying my car also mention they had looked at that one. All seemed to be impressed with its condition. It did however make a strange clunk at low speed....
Worth checking out, but get an independent inspection.

Car doesn't have timing belt and water pump done.

Approximately how much would that job cost?

Thanks

Just run away now....around these parts you'll be looking at $1000+....emphasis on the (+).

I do know a few good shops that could do it. If you want the names, PM me. Whatever you do, don't take it to a dealer.

Same dealer now has 95 Pearl Yellow with 90k.

What can I expect to pay for this?

Thanks

OK,

I'm going to Calgary to check out both cars and have a few questions:

-I will pull the Y-pipe to check for excessive oil. Should I pull the
intakes on the turbos and check for play? This is done from underneath, correct?

-Should I bring a boost gauge or will checking the spin and play on the turbos, plus the reading on the stock gauge, give me a good idea of the health of the turbos? The only boost gauge I have is electronic and on the Talon, so I don't really want to have to do this.

- I will bring a compression tester. Is there historically a cylinder/s on the Stealth that are "hot" and would show the first signs of ring wear? (Please tell me it's on the front bank, lol).

Appreciate any help,

Phil

Careful pulling off the Y-pipe. it can be a right bitch to get it back on. it would be much easier to undo the two hose clamps where the two smaller hoses connect to the Y-pipe. Plus that way, you can see which turbo is blowing the oil (right hose is rear turbo if i remember correctly)

Stock boost guage is useless. Would be best to pop on an aftermarket one. Pain in the ass, but only real way to guage manifold pressure.

You will only be able to test for play in the front turbo. rear would take alot of work to get to. Front isn too hard once you get all the plumbing out of the way.

I have never done a compression test, so im no help there.

good luck

Depending when you come to Calgary, a couple of us here might be able to help out, or at least make your life difficult.

Like Eddie suggested, check the Y ends of the Y-pipe, that'll tell you a lot. If they're clean, your turbo's should be in decent shape. Look for white smoke from the exhaust when accelerating hard. That's another telltale sign of turbo problems or oxygen sensor problems.

You can do a compression test on the front bank, but that'll only tell you half the story. The effort to get to the rear ones is such a pain, you won't want to do it any time soon.

If you can compare it against a known vehicle, that would help identify any weak areas. I guess I'm sort of volunteering, so let us know when you're coming south, and we'll see if we can help you. No guarantees, but I'm sure we can nitpick any other cars we come across....

Check the y-pipe for sure. That will help you know the condition of the turbos, plus just listen to them under hard reving

Other common problems to check out, some major, some not so major.

-Transfer case (check for leaks, and if the “recall” has been done)
-Active Exhaust Switch. (Seem to be seized on ¾ of the stealths out there)
-Boost (check if possible, stock gauge is useless. I have a spare gauge if you need to borrow one. We could hook it up and “ghetto rig” it just to test)
-Dash vents (check to see if raised/cracked)
-2nd gear sychro (common problem)
-Driver side seat bolster (if leather interior, they are commonly ripped/cracked)
-Check the Idle speed motor. (Just try adjusting it up/down. – doesn’t work on several cars..??)
-Clutch (not a cheap job if it needs replacing)

I’m sure I missed a bunch of common problems. Some are annoying, some are major.
If you need a hand checking it out, I’d be happy to help.

Thanks snortin93 for making my "life difficult". My mother always said hardship builds character! lol

Seriously, thanks guys. I was planning on coming down next Thursday the 22nd, but I can bump this up to the weekend, If it fits your schedules better? Here is my e-mail and we can work out the details: pkieley@shaw.ca

-transfer case...Renfrew says there are no outstanding recalls.
-synchros...I will know when I see the receipts.
-boost...I went to the local shop today and the owner offered to pull the gauge from one of his cars...so if you have one spare I will call him and cancel, thanks!
-ISC..my Pocketlogger is plug and play on the 3S so that should help...same goes for injectors and solenoid valves.
-clutch...see synchros.

Interestingly enough when I went to my local shop there was a '93 Stealth there for sale. It had 177k on it and the interior leather was crap. The shop owner said the owner drove it like he stole it. My reply; "not interested".

Here's some more pics(note whats on the ground in front shot!)

Cheers,

Phil

No, it's a picture of the midget that's cryogenically frozen in the trunk. That keeps his body at the right temperature...

His name is "Fitz"....because he fitz in the trunk.

Weekend would work better for me. Snortin, email him...and cc. me...pls?

And yes, I have a spare HKS boost gauge.

Yellow is a nice color but those rims are Fugly IMO.

i'd go with the green one...save the rest of the $$ for repairs and mods...unless you prefer the 2nd gen

Yeah I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with a 1st gen, Monopoly.

I don't think I like the idea of the bastard OBDI/OBDII on the '94/95 and anything newer is going to be out of my price range.

I'm trying to remember...patience, patience!

It may be cheaper to order directly from Getrag in Germany. Just a thought...
