View Full Version : Will a 16" rim fit an AWD/TT?

I know there have been a number of threads relating to different rim size and being able to fit with the All Wheel Drive/Twin Turbo disk/rotor combination. I need to get some winter tires for my TT, and would prefer a slightly narrower tire for better snow/ice driving. Additionally, 16" tires/rims are going to keep some money in my pocket.
My owner's manual states:
In the case of cars equipped with 245/45 ZR17 tires, change all the original tires (including wheels) to 225/55 R16 tires (16x8JJ wheels).
Will this work, and is anyone running 16 inchers? Or am I screwed, and have to get 17" no matter what. Thanks for enlightening me.
Looking for traction....

i think the switch to 16's should be OK. There's a guy at my work who drives a 95' TT with aftermarket crome 16's. but before you buy them, just double check with the place you bought them at to make sure.
I heard that the N/A RT 16” will fit on the TT.
They fit. Even the base model 3000GT rims fit on a VR-4.

Really?!?! :D That's excellent. I was under the impression that it was hard to get rims, even 17-18", that fit without interfering with the brake caliper. Is it just aftermarket wheels then that have issues?
If I can get a 16" wheel/tire combo, then I'm sailing, er skating...
Well it depends. Some aftermarket rims might not clear the calipers. You might need some spacers. And sometimes you might need to get spacers so big, that's it's not even worth it. I'm not completly sure, someone correct me if i'm wrong, but do the TT guys use spacers when putting on the n/a rims???

not sure. I never thought of that!
Looking at my rims, I can't imagine getting anything smaller then a 17 on there. The calipers look like they would interfere with everything.

I wanted a set of 16's for winter, but didn't have any luck finding some that would it over the brakes. Ended up buying a set of 18's for summer (Konig Tantrums) and using my 17's with blizzak MZ01's for winter.

Did you get the chance to try any Stealth NA 16" wheels on?

No, I only tried aftermarket rims, and steelies. I know of someone in town who has a Stealth NA for sale....perhaps you can borrow one to try. Are you on the beyond.ca message board by any chance?
My username is the same on there.
