well, normally im all about getting my hands dirty and trying to do things myself ... but me + hot metal + expensive little electronics = asking for trouble haha.

so just wondering if anybody has a shop theyd recommend before i randonly start flipping through the phonebook? i just need a little electronics shop type place that can replace the 3 caps on my ecu for me.

im REALLY hoping that my ecu caps are shot ... even though they LOOK ok ... either way probably a good idea i guess. my car has been having some strange problems lately that have me stumped!

thanks for any suggestions! :)

Well, what kind of problems are you having?... IN my case, my caps got so bad in my ecs modual that it fried the whole board, I sent it to place down in texas called ECM TO GO. Apartly they are awsome and highly recomended. But Im going to replace the caps in my ECU soon as I get them and hopfully that will fix my problem, which is that the engine is only fireing on 4 of the 6 clynders, but I think theirs a broken trace in my board I just cant seem to find it, Would you or anyone else have some sort of picture or ciruite scematic of where the ignition traces are on the board?

Try Dale Adams auto tuning, or mabye even the corvette service, they are pretty firmilar with ECU and auto electronics, if not ECM TO GO, is awsome also...if you really feel like waiting 2 weeks and 40 bucks worth of shipping.

Also...Is it possible to bypass the ecs completly?

yeah you should be able to unplug the ecs module is you no longer want to use the ecs feature. some people seem to believe a faulty ecs computer can lead to ecu problems.

there seem to be 2 things that tend to mess up the ecu though: leaking caps, and a broken upright board. if the upright board is shot ... so is your ecu. if its just caps, you may be able to fix the ecu by replacing the caps and cleaning up the board. the board is multi-layered tho ... so if you have broken traces they may be very difficult to hunt down unless theyre rather obvious.

btw i brought my board to a little tv repair shop and they replaced my caps for 30 bucks (including the cost of the caps). i can probably dig up the name if anyone wants it but i dont remember it off hand.

i strongly encourage EVERYONE with a 1g ecu to have the caps replaced ... whether leaking or not. my caps did not appear to be leaking, but after being removed you could see that they were beginning to leak underneath.

Maybe before I start any tuning I should get my caps replaced like you said... just in case. Will prevent me from ripping the hair out of my head in the future I am sure. What is the name of this tv repair shop you had yours done at?

itll save you a lot of headaches later on down the road. this way youre not constantly wondering if various issues are ecu related. is it the ecu... or my wiring? my ecu... or my ignition? my ecu... or my tune? etc etc etc.

ill see if i can dig up the name of the shop; i must have written it down somewhere.

yea just a tip. My ECU looks completly fine. My ESC was fried you could see it was black everywhere....but just because you cant see any damage does not mean its alright considering my car wont fire on 2 clyders and it looks completlly fine.....Surreal do you have anymore de-dails on this upright board. or a website or something Ive been looking everywhere about which board it is and such
THanks

yeah my ecu looked fine until i had the caps removed.
the upright board doesnt seem to be repairable though... search on 3si for it. there was a guy making an ecu testing machine at one point who made some interesting posts.

Hey guys,

I replaced the caps on my own ECU. If you wanna ship me your ecu, I can do them for you. (I'm an electronics eng. technologist - so fear not my friends ;-)
