I am debating if I should fix the engine I have now or just drop in a new one. I wanted to know how much for a decent engine just so I would know if the price peole are asking are over priced or not.

I bought a JDM front clip in california with 35K km for $3000usd.

Used the engine transmission and sold off everything else for about $1500.

Shipping was $400. usd. I think I got great value for my money and have a PERFECT engine and a trans with PERFECT synchros, neither of which I had before

if you are looking for big power in the next year, maybe you could made it rebuilt stronger, more powerful..
or try to see what's involve in a swap of a 2nd gen (forge crank and maybe few other better parts..)

I was quoted 3000$CA for a front clip shipped to my door, that's including taxes, if you do a search in the WTB adds for a front clip I'm sure you'll find the link that someone posted, I think the place was situated in Montreal

A good block shop should charge you around $2500 to rebuild a motor and add forged pistons. This is the best way to go. Even if you sell your car, you will get more money having rebuilt your motor with forged pistons. The stock motors in our cars are weak. Be sure to upgrade the pistons, and if you have an older block, get a forged crank. You'll have no problems this way.

if i end up going a swap to a 2nd gen. wouldn't it be more or less the same as if I would get my 1st gen rebuilt?

Because the second gen used a crank fire ignition sensor, you need a different ECU and wiring mods. It does have a 4 bolt main but still may have the rod/piston weakenesses.

Forged pistons, should be accompanied by forged rods too and that package will cost at least $1500 BEFORE doing the engine removal tear down and rebuilt. Your cost will at least be $4000 not $2500....

The rebuild process is pricey

I spent $8000.00 to rebuild my motor and 1000 to remove and install it. But I put the best parts money can buy. The best forged coated pistons. The strongest forged connecting rods. Stage three heads from dynamic racing. 3sx cams, spockets, adjustable lifters etc. etc. And I have the receipts to prove it. It should cost 2500 for a basic rebuild with forged pistons, 3500 if you don't have a forged crank, and another 1000-1500 to install the motor. I think these prices's are really cheap. I've spent 25,000 on my car in hopes of making 700hp. When I get it dyno'd in a month I will post the results. I honestly beleive that I have done everything possible to make this one of the fastest 3000gt's out there. But we'll see what the dyno says.

Where do you find someone in Alberta to remove and install our turbo engine for $1000?
I paid almost $3000

Who in edmonton did the rebuild on your motor if you don't mind me asking? And you will have to let me know when you go to the dyno and if my cars done I'll bring it. I'll have almost the same setup so i'm curious to see the difference in dyno numbers. Did you end up going with the 368's or did you go with something else?

Matt monnett ran a 9.7 on a stock shortblock and was running low 11's and hit 10's for the longest time with his DR800 setup again with a stock shortblock. Are stock internals are far from weak. I would make sure to go with the forged crank though.

nothing wrong with the stock rods unless your going to use nitrous or push 600+ Awhp. I would get some wiseco pistons and a 2nd gen forged crank though.

The company who rebuilt my motor is Pro-Stock. The guy I talk to over their is Randy. The company that removed my engine, and is installing it when it's finished is Great Canadian Auto. The guy I deal with is Nick. Nick is interested in doing more vr4 motors. I have both they're numbers if you guys are interested, or you can look them up in the Edmonton yellow pages.

I got Randy to do my heads instead of Dynamic racing, because he said he can do a better job. I will dyno this car the minute it is ready and I will get in touch with you the minute it it done. Quimby have you got any 1/4 mile slips yet? Curious what my car might be capable of.

No not yet, I'm pulling crazy al's motor and doing a 120k service, and a turbo swap. Once i'm done his I plan on getting to work on mine. I ended up deciding on IPS's TD05 kit with the "big" 16g's ported and polished. I am having my head work done locally aswell but I, aswell as some other friends have had some problems with prostock in the past so I decided to go with someone else. Btw what are you using for an engine management system?

That's right around what I charge if you ever need it again. ( I hope you don't) :)

For engine and boost management I bought Apexi AVC-R type R and Apexi Neo. I purchased these things from 3sx not realizing Ebay stores sell them for 70% less and they're brand new. I should have gone with the tdo5's. But I didn't know any better at the time, and I spent to much money on the tdo4's already. Randy at Pro Stock is very slow to build motors though. I bought 680CC injectors, I hope they're enough.

kind of a newb question, but do all second gen engines have a forged crank?

Yes The tt and vr4s do. The non turbo's have a different crank.
