View Full Version : My first mod!

Woohoo! After some fiddling, and a trip to Home Depot for some new bolts, I finished my first mod! I know it's just a first step, and it's not that big a deal, but I wanted to show off my massive filter! I got an 8" powerstack with an adapter (hard to get on). The filter was hard to fit into that space, so I'd probably go with 7" normally, but I think bigger is better, as long as you keep the 1" airspace in front of the filter (which it only barely has). The install was surprisingly tough considering it's just an intake...the bracket didn't fit just right without filing, and the whole thing needed some coaxing to get in, but I think it turned out pretty good, don't you? And it flows over 1300 cfm! Here's some pics of the final product:

Holy thats a monster! twice as much surface area as my puny unit (what was that about my puny unit? :( )
Anyway, i was wondering if you can hear the turbos sucking with that thing? a sort of high pitch whistling/turbine sound. not very loud. put down your passenger window and give it some gas in 2nd. I put mine on and i could hear the turbos spool, and starrted to wonder if im hearing it because it was not large enough. mine is a sort of home-fabricated jobbie. Took one off of my friends Volvo T5 and modified it to fit, just cause it was free. I wondered if i was hearing the air being sucked through the filter cause of not enough surface area, or if it was actually flowing freely enough, and i was hearing the turbine in the turbo.
Now, if you can hear that on your mother filter, than i know that the sound is from the turbos and not because of lack of flow.
Im pretty sure its the turbos themselves, but with every mod i do, it gets a little louder, which makes me wonder if my little filter is becoming a choke-point. How much did that set you back?

Looks good. Dangerous to start modding, since once you start you can't stop. What do you have planned next.
My car was completely stock just over a year ago. :D

Yeah, things are gettin' serious already. I just got a fuel and boost controller too. They're on their way. I decided on the new HKS EVC 5:

I've heard good things about it. I also got an HKS S-AFR since I'm going to need a fuel controller eventually and this one has more adjustments than the apexi unit, and has a few nice extras, like an automatic adjustment for sudden changes in A/F ratio, which makes it painless to run an open air bov.
I tried going for a drive with the new intake. I can hear a definite sucking/wooshing noise when I get on it, and the turbos make a bit more noise now. I don't really feel a performance difference, but I guess with stock boost and fuel I'm not getting much more power with just the intake. The BC will add some good power though. I'm thinking of running it at 100 kpa, which is about 14.3 psi. Is this a safe level with stock fuel components? And that'll put me over the 350 hp mark. Man, the mod bug's hit me hard :).
edit: got the units wrong, wrote psi instead of kpa

14.3 psi = your car is safe
100 psi = your car is a big smoking crater in the middle of young st. :)
(did you mean 100%?)

Oh, and to Eddie, to answer your other question, the filter cost $50 US, and the adapter cost $15 US. I think 65 is pretty good for an intake, especially vs a K&N or HKS intake, plus this one outflows any single filter intake there is for the 3/S. This is absolutely the biggest filter you can fit in there.
I got the adapter from here:
http://www.projectimport.com/adapt.htm
And I got the filter from here:

Their filter selection is great. I'd probably order the 7" if I did it again, just for a simpler installation. I don't think the 8 flows that much more. It was pretty hard getting that filter in there though, and it's probably not coming out...:).

Oops...converting units without naming them properly...
What I meant to say was 100 kpa, which is the unit the EVC uses, and is about 14.3 psi. psi to kpa is about a 7:1 conversion.

Do you really need the adapter ?
I order the same thing as you and i am still waiting for it to come...
I go to the adapter website and the shipping to Canada is like 17US, rediculous.....

Sweet, I really need the dimensions of that unit to make a custom panel. Can someone please measure both for me. I posted the same question on 3si, but no one has responded.

Yeah, I wanted to get Smokinvr4 to make a custom overhead pod for the evc and the afr, but I don't know the dimensions. I'll send them along to you though when I get the units and measure them.

Nice start 3kgtzero.
I put in the 7" Powerstack. I can certainly hear the spool up to some degree, but when I up the boost, I'm sure it will be more noticeable.

Scott and 3kgtzero, as both of you already installed the powerstack , do i need the adapter to install the filter?
If so, i need to order it now
Thx

I used the adaptor.
I recall that you do need it, but don't quote me on it.
To be safe, I think you should order it.

Yes, you absolutely need an adapter to attach the filter. Most cone filters for our cars have a 4.5" circular opening, and the stock airbox/mas has a rounded rectangle opening. So you need both a filter with a 4.5" opening, and an adapter to make an intake. Hope that helps. Any kit will include both, but if you're going custom, you need to get the adapter and filter.

That would be great if you could send me the dimensions. Thanks!!!!!
