View Full Version : Whistle/rattle coming from my rear turbo

As I pound down the road attempting to put my car right, another thing has presented itself that makes me wonder. The car is almost completely stock. Upon hard acceleration and heavy boost, the rear turbo seems to make a whistling noise with a slight rattle. None of the other 3S's I've been in sounded like this. Does anyone have any idea what this means. With empty pockets, I've already started looking at replacement turbos. Ouch!

maybe your precat has some loose shit inside it(or your cat, thats usually what rattles). Other than that no clue.

Funny you should mention the pre-cat. I only noticed this noise after I had my stock down-pipe replaced cuz it was full of holes. I had Carline muffler build me a new downpipe without the cat. They were supposed to have gutted the pre-cats. That might explain the rattle that I'm hearing. But what's causing the whistle?

I should also have mentioned that I've checked the y-pipe, and it's as clean as a whistle...lol! No oil or anything.

Any other thoughts/ideas/

Thanks!

are you sure its a whistle.. because replacing the downpipe lets you hear the turbos whine ALOT louder...

Ya, it's definitely a whistle. I had memystealthandi and DSM Power checking under the hood while I revved the engine. It definitely was coming from the near the firewall, but the front turbo area sounded fine. The other Stealths that I've been in or near, never sounded quite like this one.

I'll have to try getting an audio recording of it. That might help.

To me it sounds like a turbo whistle, but it is a lot louder than normal. You can barely hear mne on acceleration, but the noise is somewhat the same, just a lot quieter...???

It is definately a whistle though....could hear it loud and clear when you were flying down the street.

Snortin93,

Does the noise sound like a broken Coach's whistle...I have it in my N/A....I had it before and after I replaced my exhaust system...It's more amplified now that I have a new exhaust....I only get the sound upon acceleration and it gets a little higher
in pitch the more I accelerate...If I play with the gas pedal...sort of easing into each gear as opposed to slammin into the next gear ( however it still makes the sound) I can control the release of that terrible sound,.......Do our cars have an exhaust catchcan before exhausting through the downpipe ?..... The sound is bothering me so bad right now I'm thinking of getting under there with some exhaust cement and going over all the joints....my .02

PS...Rob I still have that rear bumper cover in my garage...lol

The sound we were hearing really only happens under boost (either pedal to the metal or revving high at idle and then quickly letting off) which leads us to think it's the turbo and not the exhaust. :(

Well, I think I'm gonna crawl under the car this weekend, and just make sure everything is tight. If I'm lucky and can easily remove my downpipe, I'll check into the pre-cats to make sure they were cleaned out and there is nothing in there causing the rattle. It probably won't solve my problem completely, but it'll be one less variable.

Springs? Sure thing, get DSM Power over here and I'm sure that we can get it done in less than 8 days!

Any missing parts from your car will be considered payment for services! Have I ever mentioned that I like your wheels..... :D

I finally found the whistle!!!
It's driven me crazy for 9 months, and now I've finally found it! It's taken me over 2 months to build a suitable pressure tester, but when I finally made one that sealed properly, I was on my way. DSM Power stopped over at my place tonight to drop off a boost gauge, so we decided to hook my pressure tester up, put 10 pounds of pressure into the intake system, and listened to the mother hiss. It was definitely coming from the rear turbo. The o-ring that connects the hard pipe to rear turbo was leaking terribly. It could probably have kept a 8.5x11" piece of paper in the air. My boost gauge in the car didn't even read 1 pound. Without the pressure tester, I never would have found it. Tomorrow morning it's off to Hyatt Mitsu to order 2 new o-rings.

Soon to be whistling a different tune...

Good news!!!!

DSM Power is our good luck charm. Just have him sit on the steps, and rub his belly occasionally like a buddha and the job seems to go well..??

Sounds like you 2 are more than capable of a head gasket job....hint hint.

Did you drink the rest of my beer....jk.

Speaking of pressure testers... has anyone in the edmonton area built one yet?

I've wanted to hook one up just to see if I have any leaks...

Anyone got one to lend out? Otherwise I'll make my own..

Ain't that the truth...

ShdwMastr, I'm still not completely happy with my pressure-tester setup, but when I figure it out, I'll post the info for you. The write-up about the pressure tester by Jeff Lucius has one big problem; I couldn't find that white PCV piece anywhere. I went to plumbing specialty stores, plastic places, but couldn't come up with anything close. The guys there said they'd never seen such a piece, so I don't know if maybe it's only available in the US, but it's driven me nuts.

How is it coming along with that pressure tester Snortin93?

I've got the non-Colorado version all worked out. I'll be posting a description in the Technical tips forum shortly. No one should be without one of these things. You'll be amazed at how many poor hose clamps you've got on your car, and how many leaks you never knew you really had.
