Ah ben 'sti d'ciboire de St-Sacrament de bout d'barnak!
Maudit crisse de calisse, j'ai réussi à rentrer!
(Après genre VINGT fois!!!)

Hello to all Stealth / 3000GT owners out there!
Newbie to the forum here. I've already posted this thread on 3si.org, but thought posting it for my fellow Quebecers wouldn't hurt. Thanks.

I've a '92 stock Pearl white Stealth RT/TT that hit 100000km last year (I cried for days!), so I decided to go for the full scheduled maintenance this spring - which includes changing the timing belt.

I've already changed every filter there is to change, put in new plugs and wires, and the car is at the dealer's right now for the transfer case recall (lucky me - when I had it inspected last year, it just so happened that the transfer case gasket WAS leaking but not enough for me to repair it.)

My question is : my mechanic seems to wanna change everything accessable to him in the engine while he's there doin' the timing belt job, but what exactly DOES or SHOULD be changed? Here's a list of parts and prices I have so far (in CDN dollars):

Timing belt $274
Tensioner $152
Tensioner pulley $ 69
Drive belt $ 60
Water pump $245

Now apart from these parts, my mech. said I might need idlers and a whole bunch of assorted belts. He said he'd replace ONLY what needed replacement, but he also said he ordered over $1500 in parts from Chrysler, and THAT has me worried! The above parts total some $750, so what the hell else could be costin' ANOTHER $750?!

Hehe, glad you were able to make it in finally..

IT's supposedly the chepaest dealer to get parts from, but i beleive the only downside is they dont' ship. But a member near there might be able to help you out if you wana save a couple of dollars.

I think your mechanic just wants to make some money, hehe. Where in quebec are you exactly?? Marc(fou) lives in gatineau, if you're not too far from there, i'm sure he'd be able to help out with the labour, and i'm pretty sure he'll be ALOT cheaper than your mechanic. He works on our cars, and he knows what he's doing.

I'm in Vaudreuil, on the West shore of Montreal (I know, it's wierd - it ain't the South OR the North shore, but in between). Gatineau's about 2 hours away or 1h½ by Stealth. ;)
Had a girlfriend there once, and have a good buddy that lives in Aylmer. I'll gladly do the mileage for competent afordable work.

My mechanic's in St-Eustache at Thibeault Performance. The guy's an ex-Chrysler mechanic that worked there for over 20 years. His son now races, and with the rise of 'ricer' mods, they opened up their own garage.

I sorta trust him (for now). Last year he repaired a flex-joint on my stock exhaust. The part alone was $650 (Chrysler), so he had the welding done by an independant shop and did the job for around $300. He charged me over $150 to do a compression check on my cylinders though, but we all know what a bitch that rear plenum is.

I'll see. The car's already there, and the %$/"! Chrysler parts already ordered, so I'll have to keep my fingers crossed. He IS getting me a water pump for $250 compared to the Chrysler $650, soooo. Worse comes to worse, I'll say fuck it and push my car to Gatineau.

To be continued...

Thanks Pet for recommending me!

Salut Draven

If the water pump is not leaking, it doesn’t need to be changed and befor changing the drive belt I would look at them. But he’s right about changing the rest.
The Timing belt is a bit expensive at $274, the rest sound about right.

$300 for the DP is a bit expensive, I repaired mine the same wait and the flex + welding was $120.

Hey fou! Glad to see you're out of hibernation. ;)

Well, I'm positive it woulda cost me less having it done by you, but I wanted to do this LAST year, so I had it done this spring instead. Besides, I had it done BEFORE taking the Stealth out and do you know how much I wanted to get that thing back after driving an Eagle Premier automatic all winter?!

If you'd like, we could go over the bill part by part and see what was exactly done, but I know for a fact that he didn't change EVERYTHING. Ended up costin' me a grand.

P.S. You're definitely on my list for any work to be done on my Stealth. Just try and respond within at least a month next time... :p

P.P.S. Any suggestions for an intake and a boost gauge? (preferably one that fits in the stock dash gauge)

Get this K&N Aircharger (#63-1000), you can buy it wherever they sell K&N. Most likely it’s a special order, but this is the larges K&N that you can fit on the stock MAS.
This one is made for the 95 to 99 DSM Turbo, it’s got a bolts sticking out of the chrome cover, that good for a mounting bracket.
