View Full Version : And the car goes psssh
Just installed my greddy Type-s BOV, and I must say I am impressed by the quality (once again) and the change.
The turbos respond light-years faster after shifting, and seem to hold boost better for some reason. I know I am only going by the stock turbo gauge (useless :o ) but I am holding right at the peak.
I need a bit of tuning, as after I lift my foot to coast I run a bit rich at 12-13 a/f ratio, but just cruising holds 14.5-14.9 perfectly. I will do a bit more tuning as parts come in. I just hope this doesn't cause me to hurt anything anytime soon as I abuse the car to hear PSSshhh all the time.
On a bad note, I had ordered Tein lowering springs but I got shipped Stillen Brake Pads instead  I had talked with teh vendor about possibly ordering pads, but didn't bother. I guess I have to email them tomorrow. (but I don't see any issues, as they are supposed to be really good).

I loved it when I installed my TurboXS-RFL.
You're right about holding boost better.
I love the sound, it is so frickin' loud... It only gets annoying once in awhile when I've been going for a long drive.
THe only thing, I've given a couple of my friends rides, and they ask me why the car sounds like a city bus (ie. no cats, and the BOV sounding like a bus engine and air brakes)
kool i want!!
you guys having any probs with ideling running rich after WOT

As far as I know, I was ALREADY running rich before the BOV.
I'm sure it made things worse. I don't have my AF installed yet, but I will be getting it in a day or two (I hope).
I think I have a bad O2 sensor as well, because I get crappy mileage!!! Oh well.

My a/f read near the same as it did before at idle, about 14.5 give or take a .1 or so. The only time I went rich is when I took my foot off the pedal and coasted. It didn't matter if I was at WOT or not, it would just go rich.
edit - by rich I mean up to about 12.5a/f. It isn't that bad, but I will fix that once I get my emanage system in there.
I am now getting really anxious to do the 13g hybrids, 450's and my eo-1 and emanage now. It is just a matter of money. :o

I was kind of disappointed with the PSSshhh sound that I was getting after I installed my (Malice's previous) Greddy Type-S BOV. That is until I put on the open element air filter, and that really brought the sound on nicely. Not RFL, but definitely noticeable. I just love that sound!!!
Sometimes the TurboXS and Apexi Twin chambers sound like a bus dumping, but I usually know it's memystealthandi trying to creep up behind me.....:D

And that could be a good thing :o ;)
Ya, the Greddy is not very loud at all. But it is what I expected, so I am happy.
I was not hoping for a really loud BPV, but the extra little note makes sure that the people next to you know you are not an n/a (well, unless you have one of those fake BOV sound makers  )

What did you guys pay for your Greddy Type-S BOV? Any good online sources/canadian sources?
I'm slowly starting looking into moding my ride...

My first one I ordered through Darkside Racing (do a search on them for my feelings on their service) and Snortin now owns it.
My new one I got through Dynamic Racing. Matt is pricy, but I got my part fairly quick and he followed my delivery instructions and sent USPS.
In canada, you will most likely get ripped off. They charge way too much to buy it up here, unfortunately.
I would suggest using Dynamic Racing or 3sx to order it.

Quimby just found out on the weekend that they've opened a MOPAC performance place in Edmonton. Give them a call and see what they'll get you one for. Let us know what you find out on the price.
Forgetting about Darkside, who seem to be the cheapest, but you may never ever see the product, I think AlamoMotor Sports www.alamomotorsports.com is the next cheapest at $199 USD. But remember, it's another $30-$40 for the adapter that is required. 3Sx lists the Greddy Type-S at $245 USD.
Davin24 in Red Deer might be talked into building you an adaptor for a more reasonable price. That's the route I took, and am quite pleased with the result.

Here ya go.... http://www.mopacauto.com/frameset1.html
They don't indicate that they carry Greddy/HKS or the like on their website, so you'll have to call to see what they'll do for you.

On the www.MVPmotorsports.com website they only show the Greddy Type-S Blow-Off-Valve Kit for 1995-99 Eclipse & 1990-99 VR4 for 245.95
The featured Blitz Super Sound Blow Off Valve Kit for VR4 & Stealth TT was 252.00
Which one did you purchase?

I can't speak from experience, but from what I've read, the Honk is your stock BOV telling you that it needs to be retired. I like the Greddy Type-S because it is a perfect replacement for the stock one. But it's not the one for you if noise is a major requirement.

Damn, I jumped in there a little late didn't I?
As for another get together this summer, there was talk of having Davin organize a mini-meet in Red Deer where we can blast out to Sylvan Lake and check out the scenery.
Also Hyatt Mitsu will be having a grand opening sometime in August, and they want to get as many 3000GT's, Stealths, Talons in front of their showroom as possible. If we can convince them to have a nice BBQ for us, I'm sure we'd get a few more people to show up.

LMAO!!!! That's exactly how I felt when I put the first post in about the honk (that was located at the end of page 1), then I ended up reading the rest and felt like a total retard.
However the response to another Alberta gathering was directed at ShdwMastr's question near the top of this page. :D
But with respect to Keiichi's request about the Turbo XS. Memystealthandi is running a Turbo XS Type H34 BOV Open Loop w/RFL spring. It is the loudest BOV I've heard yet. He can be five cars in front or behind you, and you know exactly when he's shifting. If you want to get noticed, that Turbo XS is your BOV. It is not a direct replacement for the stock one; it's much bigger and you have to find some open space to put it.
Also, since Quimby hasn't piped up, he's running the Apexi twin chamber unit, and it's plenty loud as well.
There, I've wiped my nostrils

Yes, the honk is your stock BOV telling you its time is short ;)
I have the TurboXS RFL. It is AWESOME, but it is also REALLY loud. So if you don't like that (or want to be more inconspicuous) it is NOT the BOV for you. :D

I was thinking of doing closed loop with the turboxs h34
or the greddy type-s
But since I'm light in the pocket right now....
I was hoping to see what's a good deal.....

I have the HKS Super Sequnetial BOV which goes straight to atmosphere, and its a sort of middle road from what ive heard. the Blitz is really loud, the Greddy (closed loop) is pretty quiet, and the HKS is in the middle.
will try to give my 2 cents on eveything else when i have more time.

Alright, im back.
Ya, the "hoot owl" noise is your BPV leaking. A few of us were playing on the QEW and one was a newer turbo Volvo that made this crazy noise when he was pushing it. sounded like an old redneck blowing into his whisky jug on the front porch :) And it was cause his boost was higher than the limit of the BPV, and it basically short circuits through the system.
So your turbos are doing all this work, pushing all this air towards the motor but, lets just say, 20% of it is leaking through the BPV and back into the intake on the sucking side of the turbo. Bad of course cause only 80% of the air is going to the engine, but also bad because your mass air measures all the air coming in (100%) and spits the fuel for that much air into the motor. but not all the air is actually going INTO the motor, so you will be running very rich. Basically, you will get LESS power while using MORE gas
A BOV isnt a power-adding mod, but if you are leaking through the stock one, you will notice an increase in power, as it comes back to the level its supposed to be at.... Plus now you can raise the boost above stock levels! :p
Just a side idea, has anybody done/heard of venting the STOCK BPV to the atmosphere? disconnect it on the 'blow' side and plug the hole it was connected to? Free BOV noise if anyone wants to try it?
Also if a couple hundred bucks is rich for your blood, you can get a used one from a 1st generation DSM (if you can find one, people scoop those up fast) and it will fix all leaking problems, for very cheap. But the sound will stay stock.
oww, my hands are cramping...

I can't believe that I neglected to mention this. There is a silencer in the plastic part that the MAS connects to. It's kinda of a y shaped hollow pipe that can be removed by prying it out. It will give your BOV a little more noise once it's removed. You can't really see it as far as I remember, but if you stick your fingers in there, you'll feel it.

Thanks for all the replies....
Yeah, it really sucks when I'm boosting...and you hear my air intake go WOOOOOOSH...sucking in all the air...and the boost meter going up...then......HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT
and my meter goes down and down!! NOOOOOOO!
At least third holds boost for a longer duration.......it really blows on 2nd gear....
HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!
