View Full Version : Auto Trannies Galore, Good and bad!
Copied below from my post on 3Si:
In my continuing quest for a tranny solution for my 92RT automatic, I am currently left with the following:
Recent model 3000GT tranny - Sold.....
92 DOHC trannies: 2 of them! Each one I fried after about ten miles (reason still unknown) - asking 150.00 US each. Use for rebuild, core charge, connectors, whatever. The two come with ONE torque converter between them.
92 SOHC tranny (same storry as the dohc ones; installed, petered out after ten miles). 100 beans, c/w converter.
I *STILL* don't know what the problem is; for all I know some of the allegedly-fried ones might still be usable. (You know tranny shops....)
I'd prefer pick-up; can deliver for a fee in upstate NY, Ontario and such.

So I take it by "continuing quest" that you haven't got this resolved? :( Sorry to hear that. Maybe you should do an auto to manual conversion... seems like the only way around this crazy problem.
Latest theory is the 'blocked rad' thingy (from when the original tranny toasted). Isn't this hillarious????? (Insert demented laughter here)
This last tranny, I drove to Philly and back to get it. Car is in a 'reputable' tranny shop. Lo and behold - doesn't fit.
I'll YET get to the bottom of this, even if it costs me my house....
Here's the link for the recent-model DOHC tranny. It's like new!

You keep saying DOHC tranny.... but all 3S auto trannies are the same. In fact its also the same auto tranny used in all Diamantes.
I guess you didn't see my auto tranny for sale a few weeks ago. I sold it for $400 US.. I just wanted to get rid of it.
Dude...
I've learned more about trannies in the past month or three, then I EVER wanted to know. Like the difference between 91/92 and 93 and up - the differential (more splines in later years). I did have a SOHC tranny installed at one point on the RT, but it was a bad fit, as far as tranny mounts. Methinks the tranny was held up by the axle itself. I've learned (from a guy who does that) that swapping diff's is a touchy job. I've learned that our rads are difficult to flush after a tranny is toasted. Etc...
I *was* watching you sell yours - that was an option I kept in mind until you went and listed it. At that time I didn't know what the hell is up and whether I needed yet another tranny, or maybe just the converter.
In any case, RT will be ready tomorrow, they say. If THIS doesn't fix it (new tranny AND a new rad), I'll shoot the fucking thing and set it on fire. Just kidding. I think. Maybe. Not.

My engine is a SOHC and I'm using the tranny from a 93 Stealth R/T (DOHC), the tranny mount is the same part # for 5 speed DOHC and SOHC. But... I'm talking about 5 speed... and you're talking about ATX... so who knows.
Setting the thing on fire is looking like a good option after all the shit you've had to go through with that thing! Or just park it in front of a high school and accidentally leave the keys in the ignition. :p
High-school is not an option. Kids would need a tow truck to steal the beast....
Anyway, today will tell the tale. I'm petrified - car should be ready noonish. Now I ponder the what-ifs. What if it's a bad ground or something and NOT plugged cooling. What if it's the computer after all (maybe I bought TWO bad ones). Etc.....
