I'm hoping the knowledgable members of this board can provide me with some assistance. I need a winter driver, and the choices seem rather limited. I already have a couple of 4X4's in the driveway so the prospect of buying another truck isn't doing much for me. AWD vehicles are few and far between. I owned the first WRX in the Peace country but that was short-lived. So I've narrowed it down to a late model Talon or a Stealth. Really too many Talons around so that leaves the Stealth...and a lot of questions.
My biggest concern with these things is their reliability. I see so many for sale needing repairs or with new trannys/motors. I don't plan on taking this car to the track or anything, but I will get my use out of it. ;) I am wondering how they hold up. Also, I am wondering if there is anyone in Edmonton who might be interested in meeting and talking shop/showing off their pride and joy. I will be down tomorrow night likely through Saturday. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. More questions to follow I am sure. Thanks.

Cant say that mine has been terribly unreliable. a 1993 Twin Turbo with 113,00 on the clock that has been running +6psi over stock for nearly a year and a half now. Only major cost was the 100,000 tuneup. (waterpump, timing belt, tensioner..)
Plus remember that only the R/T twin turbo has the AWD system.
Seems like a strange choice for a winter beater, but hey, if pick one up, you will be driving it all summer too.... I notice you dont have one car that actually TURNS. :p
Enjoy those off-ramps with some All wheel drive, All wheel steering, Electronically controlled adjustable suspension, and 17" tires :)
Most people store thiers for the winter, but i drive it all year and dont really have any problems with 17" all seasons.

Thanks for the feedback Ed. It is a weird choice for a Winter beater I suppose. But then what else compares for under $20,000? I'm thinking a set of blizzaks would turn one of these into a very competent car on icy streets.
I may drive it year round too if I like it. All I know is I don't want another truck in the driveway. I'm driving a 2003 GMC Duramax dually crew cab 4 X 4 right now.
BTW, it absolutely, positively *MUST* be a twin turbo AWD car. Which ones are those? The nomenclature on these cars is kind of confusing. Thanks.

Lol. With all due respect, the TTA would equal or better a Stealth in corners or any other driving parameter. Its the fastest F body ever built, including the new LS1's. The others are not great handling cars/trucks 'tis true. But then the slowest one, the Typhoon, ran a 13.2 at 94 (lifting). So they are all 12 second vehicles. Reliably. ;)
Anyways I look forward to driving a stealth. I understand that they are not the strongest track cars due to their weight. But they shine admirably at their intended use...the reason I want one...grand touring. :)

Hey Dean;
I just posted on the Vr3000/Stealth message board, asking about Blizzaks for my 91 R/T T/T. I am forced to drive it this winter against my 'druthers, so I want good tires for traction. Have you used Blizzaks before? You asked about Stealth reliability? Well, the engine is great but the 5 spd tranny is out of my car being repaired as we speak... wouldn't allow me to shift into second or reverse all of a sudden on a trip home from Edmonton.... no warning. Weird thing is that it still shifts into fourth fine, which uses the same linkage as second and reverse. What really gets me is that my Stealth has only 42,000 original kms on it.... and DaimlerChrysler of course says sorry, I'm on my own. How can you tell from the street if its a Twin Turbo or not? Biggest giveaway is the wheel design. If one rockets by you too fast for you to see the wheel type, the R/T T/Ts have dual exhaust cutouts in the rear valance... the R/Ts and ESs don't. And of course, the T/Ts have the "Twin Turbo" callouts on the doors, but they can be difficult to see at a distance. Good luck in your search for a T/T Stealth... they are a blast to drive!

I needed a sportscar for winter and AWD was a requirement. As you mentioned, that limits the choices somewhat. I think the Stealth is a perfect choice, if you have the right tires on it. In winter, the weight/solidness is a bonus, especially if you happen to make contact with another vehicle.
The Talon was my second choice, but I wanted something different. The Subaru SVX was another possibility, but I'm not fond of homely cars or women. :D The WRX was beyond my means, and the Porsche Carrera 4S was just a dream.....
Reliability has a lot to do with how the previous owner's took care of them. Becuz of the performance of the cars, some get trashed pretty good. Be careful, find a good solid one, and you'll be happy. There are quite a few on the market, so you should have a good selection to choose from.

Thanks for the feedback. Qwkenuf, I do not personally have experience with the Blizzaks although friends swear by them.
As to the reliability, the fact that Mitsubishi put every bell and whistle imaginable on these cars is what worries me. I've been told they are not fun to work on, and stories of the drivetrain packing it in for no apparent reason seem not too uncommon. But as mentioned, what else are you going to drive in the winter?
BTW, I grew up in Fort Mac. Second graduating class out of Westwood Community HS. Still have lot's of family up there. I may come back this Christmas. Awesome place to live...at least if you live in the right neighborhood. ;)
snortin, I ordered the first WRX into the Peace country. When it arrived I took it for a test drive and after going maybe five blocks I brought it back *thoroughly* unimpressed. I don't like cars that need to wail like banshees to make any power. The sales manager's little brother wound up buying that car. I annihilated him at a stoplight one night in the Typhoon while out tuning it. Five lane intersection. He jumped on me and almost T-boned a car running the red. Nevertheless, I was across the intersection before he hit the midway point. Automatics rule for drag racing turbocharged cars. ;) Although my Stealth, like that WRX, would ideally be a manual tranny just for a change of pace.
There are only 2 of us in Edm that regularly post on this board, give me a call if you want to have a look at a 2nd gen. 909-0818

I came back early from my trip. I will be down again for a hockey tournament in two weeks. Maybe we could hook up then? Who should I ask for when I call? Thanks.

Excellent. Thanks guys. Like I said, my daughter has a tournament in Leduc on the 11th. I'd definitely like to hook up in the evening and maybe look at the few Stealths that are for sale in the Edmonton area.
As for reliability – When I got my1992 R/T Twin Turbo it add 200K on it, the rack & pinion was leaking, the clutch was done and the syncrow’s were fuck up for the 2nd & reverse.
The rack leaking at 200K is kind of normal. The clutch and trany, well the car was raced!
Now the car is at 268K on the original motor and it was beaten pretty hard.
I did 13.0 sec at 103 mph on the ¼ mile and my modifications were, bigger fuel pump and increase boost to 14 PSI.
You want a turbo Stealth/3000gt, you won’t have much choice in the matter of equipment.
