Get Up & Go at 33 Below!

Yup, the Stealth started this morning after a bone-chillin' -33 night with no block heater. Ya see, this Stealth comes from Texas where block heaters are unheard of. Three cranks and she fired up, but wow, there was an orchestra of noises I hadn't heard before as she groaned her way up to temperature. I think she was telling me to get the other "gal" the hell out of her garage... hehe.

mine didn't start this morning (battery again:rolleyes
(no block heater here either, but I use a magnetic oil pan heater)
but when I started it a few minutes ago she made the usual groans and moans (not to mention the trying to roll forward in neutral when I released the clutch lol)

edit- it's warmed all the way up to -28 here now (woohoo)

Magnetic oil pan heater eh? I'll have to look into that.

Speaking of batteries... my car came with a Walmart EverStart battery when I bought it six years ago. Thinking it was crap, I quickly replaced it with a Red Top Optima and stuck the EverStart in the garage somewhere. The Red Top died permanently back in September, so I dug out the old EverStart, charged it up, and it has been a trooper ever since. I won't spend big cash on a battery ever again.

I was having trouble the first couple winters with dead batteries (which I finally diagnosed last year when the ABS pump started running the second I hooked up the old battery because the new one was so dead it wouldn't take a charge). I was thinking about an optima- maybe I'll rethink that

We warmed up to a sweltering -21 today in cowtown. Almost had to dig out my shorts. No heat at work for 5 hours...that was fun.

yeah i was happily suprised to see the 91 gto start up smoothly with the remote start at -34 this morning. I did just change the oil last week though to castrol syntec 5w50, so i bet that helps alot with the starting. Ive never heard it complain much yet from the cold, other than frigan ice on the drive shaft hitting the exhaust shield or something as i drive, very annoying.

Unhappy Lol. Alberta's winters......very very cold....

I bought a 2005 Duramax diesel from Texas with no block heater. Try as I might, the little bugger wouldn't start. Ended up driving the 1992 Dodge Stealth t/t with the electrical tools in the back. Lol. The car wasn't plugged in and it fired right up ( this was a couple years ago -35 spell). I know.. it's a diesel.

Wow, I'm impressed, not with the friggin' weather, but with this car's incredible cold start ability. How low can it go?

starting

Yea no problems for my car either, Starts right up first try. I am having the same moan and groan...i think its mostly the TOB. Got a remote start for 99 bucks. Anyone know if we need any extra modules? Its a 5spd. I dont think its something i want to mess with so i might try to get it installed. Any suggestions?

the remote start is not to bad to put in. I put a autostart one in this fall. The hardest wires to get to are the door lock ones, as you need to get them from the fuse panel near the gas pedal (GTO). I didnt wory about the hood pin wire either, and mine worked fine. If you cant find wiring colors let me know and ill check what i did.

My car started up fine this morning (even though it was a few degrees colder than yesterday). Go figure...

btw, when I bought mine, it had a remote starter semi-installed. Unfortunately semi-installed does zero work

Mine started in -40 last year BUT my powersteering idle up valve exploded from overpressure on frozen ATF, so be warned! I'd get a block heater for sure on this car, even if it techincally does start in ultra low temps! you've been warned!
